God's sovereign heand is at work, preserving his people and paving the way to blessing if they chose to obey. The Word of God brings revival and reformation to the covenant community. The people of God cannot dwell in his Promised Land as faithful witnesses if they are living compromised lives, failing in matters of basic obedience and ethical integrity.

John explicitly teaches the preexistence of the Son of God, the Word who was with God and was God. Matthew emphasizes Jesus' birth to a virgin mother and adoptive father who, in faith, committed themselves to God's mysterious plan, including angelic visitors, important dreams, magi from far away, and a trip to Egypt. Luke demostrates God's sovereign hand guiding history to fulfill prophecy and highlights the humble shepherds who visited Jesus.

Jesus' ministry was announced and endorsed bby John the Baptist, one of the most significant figures in Judea at that time. The four evangelists emphasized not only Jesus' message, miracles, and atoning death, but how he lived his life in full accordance with God's will, the life we were meant to live. Jesus' message was authenticated with miracles. The primarey opposition to Jesus' ministry (and that of John before him) came from the religious leaders of hte day.

A massive showdown with the religious leaders seems inevitable. Jesus, once again, is affirmed as God's Son by God himself as he speaks with Moses and Elijah on a mountaintop. The question of Jesus' identity is emerging as the central concern of Jesus' day and of the Gospels. The disciples, despite Jesus' frank proclamations, still do not understand that he will die and be raised again in three days. Jesus raises a man three days dead, demonstrating that he is the resurrection and the life. The conspiracy to kill Jesus is set in motion with the recruitment of Judas Iscariot.

In his last hours with his disciples, Jesus took time to teach them what true servanthood looks like and express his love for them, knowing they would abandon him. Even as he was arrested, Jesus was in control of the situation; he was not a victim but a champion on his way to battle. The religious and political leaders who crucified Jesus were motivated more by a desire for self-preservation than for justice. Jesus, fully man and fully God, felt the full weight of God's wrath against sin as he was beaten for our transgressions and lifted up on the cross for our healing.
